MAAPnext Floodplain Map Updates: What to Know

Harris County has begun the formal rollout of the MAAPnext floodplain maps, a major update that will reshape how flood risk is evaluated across the region.

The draft maps have been released to public officials for a 30-day review period. To view the Draft Maps, click the link here: FEMA’s Draft Proposed Map

Preliminary maps are expected to be released to the public afterward, followed by an anticipated three-month appeal and comment period. While the new maps are moving forward, guidance on how they will be interpreted and regulated is still being finalized by the Harris County Flood Control District and local jurisdictions.

As these updates move toward public release, some properties may be newly mapped into the floodplain. This could affect development feasibility, permitting, finished floor elevation requirements, and flood insurance considerations. During the transition period, projects may need to be evaluated for both current floodplain maps and MAAPnext data.

Additional updates may include new HCFCD H&H guidance, City of Houston Chapter 19 revisions, and potential changes to finished floor elevation requirements, though details are still evolving.
